This scheme is designed to promote and sustain the best proposals in intellectual history and the history of ideas, providing adequate financial and logistical support. VivaMente has a broader scope and timeline than any other CSMBR grant, allowing scholars to explore any topic—from ancient to contemporary history of philosophy, science, medicine, and technology.

Under this scheme, €5,000, plus the free use of the Domus Comeliana (worth an additional €2,500 per day), will be awarded to the best proposals for a maximum 2-day event to be held in Pisa. VivaMente Conferences are open to scholars of all disciplines.

VivaMente is a highly competitive grant, offering a prestigious platform for both senior and early-career scholars to advance international intellectual debate.

Applications must meet the QRI criteria: Quality, Relevance, and Internationality.
Eligible events include lecture series, colloquia, seminars, conferences, workshops, classic or digital exhibitions, as well as public engagement events (including those via media, figurative and performing arts), and similar.

Previous experience in organizing large events is desirable. For this reason, the scheme requires the endorsement of a CSMBR Ordinary Fellow, which must be sought prior to submitting the proposal. Applicants will need to submit an application form, their CV, a separate cost spreadsheet (available on our website), and, in the case of external funding, a letter of commitment from each of the funding institutions involved.

The proposal should not exceed 1,500 words and must include a detailed description of the event, including how it meets the QRI criteria, the state-of-the-art, the names and number of invited speakers, the time schedule, any additional sponsors (if applicable), and whether the organizers intend to charge any registration fees.

VivaMente Conferences primarily focus on intellectual history and the history of ideas, but a multidisciplinary approach is welcome and strongly encouraged.

Events hosted at the Domus Comeliana are intended for an audience of up to 40 people.
