About us

The Italian Society for the History of Science (SISS) is a cultural association founded in Pisa at the Domus Galilaeana on November 10, 1982. Since 2021, SISS has been headquartered at the Museo Galileo in Florence.

The Society unites scholars conducting research in the history of science and related fields, promoting the study of the history of science and technology both within Italian universities and in broader society, both in Italy and internationally. SISS collaborates with similar institutions, associations, and museums to enhance and disseminate knowledge of the history of science. It also fosters the study and appreciation of both tangible and intangible heritage related to the history of science and technology preserved in Italian libraries, archives, and museums.

The Society organizes annual congresses, seminars, conferences, workshops, and other initiatives aimed at both the dissemination and public understanding of the history of science and technology, as well as the teaching and training of academic and non-academic staff at university, post-university, school, and lifelong learning levels. Additionally, it promotes a variety of publications, including the open-access journal Scientia.

The Society acts as a liaison with Italian universities and ministries on all matters concerning academic regulations and research in the field of history of science and technology.

SISS is an institutional member of the European Society for the History of Science (ESHS) and represents Italy, as an ordinary member, in the Division of History of Science and Technology of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IUHPST/DHST).

Scholars from around the world with an interest in the history of science and technology are welcome to join the Italian Society for the History of Science.
