SUMMARY:The Role of Academies in the Co-Evolution of Science and the State
LOCATION:German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in Halle (Saale)\, Germany.
DESCRIPTION:The Role of Academies in the Co-Evolution of Science and the StateWhat is t
he relationship between scientific knowledge and state power? How have acad
emies of sciences shaped – and been shaped by – political authority, govern
ance, and societal expectations? How have these institutions mediated betwe
en science and the scientists, on the one hand, and the state, on the other
? These questions lie at the heart of the workshop The Role of Academies in
the Co-Evolution of Science and the State, organized by the European Acade
mies Research Initiative (EARI). While individual European academies have b
een studied extensively, a genuinely international and comparative perspect
ive remains underdeveloped. EARI addresses this gap by making academies the
mselves the object of historical and systematic inquiry.\nThe workshop focu
ses on the development of modern sciences and the emergence of modern state
institutions as mutually constitutive historical processes. Academies ofte
n operated at the boundary between autonomy and authority – between indepen
dent knowledge production and official state functions – and can thus be un
derstood as boundary organizations mediating science, governance, and socie
ty.\nWe invite paper proposals that engage with these themes from historica
l, comparative, and interdisciplinary perspectives. Possible topics include
, but are not limited to:\n• Academies as boundary organizations between sc
ience and the state\n• Academies and empire: roles before, during, and afte
r colonial rule\n• Academies in Europe before, during, and after the Cold W
ar\n• Comparative studies of academies across political systems and regimes
\n• Transnational networks, international cooperation, and scientific diplo
macyNon-European perspectives and global entanglements of academies\nAlthou
gh EARI is a European network, contributions addressing non-European cases
or global comparisons are explicitly encouraged.\n
