Religious institutions and actors are among the key players in the production of archaeological knowledge and in heritage preservation processes. However, studies on the involvement of religious actors who are not Christian remain very rare. Furthermore, regardless of the context, the role of religion in archaeological practice and, conversely, the effects of archaeology on religious practices, functions, and beliefs remain largely unexplored in scholarly analysis. This special issue thus aims to highlight and analyze the interactions between the fields of religion and archaeology in the 19th and 20th centuries, whether in a national or transnational context. It encourages examination of the relationships among the various actors (both individual and collective, secular and religious) who engage in and produce archaeological knowledge.
